Lofandi Challenges Shimano, Bosch in E-bike Gear Market

Chinese innovator Lofandi Intelligent Technology is making significant inroads into the global e-bike smart transmission market, a sector long dominated by established players like Japan's Shimano and Germany's Bosch. The company recently secured a substantial funding injection, adding several tens of millions of yuan (hundreds of millions of RMB) in a Series B extension round. This capital infusion, backed by prominent investors including Guotai Haitong Securities, Fortune Capital, and the Guangzhou Development District (Huangpu District) Science and Technology Innovation Venture Capital Fund, will fuel the development of next-generation products, expand manufacturing capacity, and bolster its international sales network.

Founded in 2012, Lofandi has rapidly ascended to become China's leading manufacturer of automatic internal gear hubs. Beyond these core components, their product portfolio now encompasses integrated motor and gear systems known as MEGS (Motor Electronic Gear System), manual internal hubs, and smart locks. This diversification strategy positions Lofandi to capture a broader share of the rapidly expanding e-bike ecosystem.

The global e-bike market is experiencing explosive growth, projected by Fortune Business Insights to reach $57.5 billion in 2025 and surge to $193.23 billion by 2034, with an impressive compound annual growth rate of 14.4%. This expansion is particularly pronounced in Asia, including China and Japan, as well as in European and North American markets. Lofandi's CFO, Yan Pu, highlighted a key market dynamic: a significant wave of e-bike replacements is anticipated in the next two to three years, as many European models purchased since 2018 approach their 8-10 year lifespan, further stimulating demand.

Traditionally, the high cost of electric internal gear hubs has limited their adoption primarily to premium e-bikes, which represent less than 40% of the European market. The mass-market segment, accounting for 70% of sales, has largely been excluded due to price barriers. Furthermore, the increasing power output of new motor systems from manufacturers like Bosch and China's Ananda presents a technical challenge for existing internal gear hubs, which struggle to handle higher torque loads without risking damage.

Lofandi's competitive edge lies in its proprietary "UHT" (Ultra-High Torque) technology, designed to elevate the input torque limit for smart internal gear hubs to an impressive 200Nm. This is a significant leap from current industry standards, where Shimano's mainstream offerings top out at 85Nm, and even specialized units like the enviolo HD have an upper limit of 100Nm. Lofandi's system leverages AI algorithms to process real-time data from motors, torque sensors, and speed sensors, optimizing the balance between pedal power and motor assistance. This intelligent system automatically adjusts gears based on rider input, terrain, and conditions, even downshifting proactively on inclines, reportedly enhancing range by up to 30%.

The company's technological prowess is gaining international recognition, with several global manufacturers already initiating mass production of models featuring Lofandi's advanced smart internal gear hubs. This validation from major industry players underscores Lofandi's potential to disrupt the established order and redefine performance standards in the e-bike component sector.
