Analysis

Berlin-based fintech startup mika has successfully closed a €6 million seed funding round, signaling a significant push to automate and simplify accounting and tax processes for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Germany. The company aims to fundamentally alter the necessity of traditional tax advisors for limited liability companies, a move that could reshape the professional services sector for millions of businesses.

The funding round was led by Smedvig Ventures, with participation from notable investors including the Basel-based family office Wecken & Cie., studiVZ co-founders Dennis Bemmann and Michael Brehm, limango founder Johannes Ditterich, and encourageventures' Martina Pfeifer. Existing backers Keen Venture Partners and Dutch Founders Fund also increased their stakes, underscoring strong confidence in mika's vision and execution.

Germany presents a particularly challenging market for accounting and tax compliance due to its intricate regulations and the direct impact of errors on tax liabilities. mika's core innovation lies in its AI-native general ledger, designed to interpret financial documents and transactions with minimal human intervention. The platform leverages a suite of specialized AI models, integrated with proprietary industry expertise and rule sets, to automate categorization, booking, and explanation of financial data. This approach aims to significantly reduce the burden and cost associated with mandatory bookkeeping, VAT pre-declarations, and annual financial statements for the nearly one million small capital companies operating in the country.

Agnieszka Walorska, co-founder and CEO of mika, highlighted the systemic barriers faced by new entrepreneurs, particularly those without access to capital or established networks. "The assumption that every German GmbH needs a tax advisor is so ingrained that many founders believe it's a legal mandate. This isn't the case, and it creates a significant hurdle, especially for individuals from less privileged backgrounds," Walorska stated. mika's mission is to democratize access to essential financial management tools, ensuring that financial obligations do not disproportionately disadvantage aspiring business owners.

Currently, over 750 companies utilize mika's platform, a substantial increase from around 400 at the beginning of the year. While initially focused on digital service providers like agencies and consultancies, the user base has expanded to include sectors such as SaaS, real estate, e-commerce, retail, and trades. The company reports impressive revenue growth, exceeding 20 percent month-over-month for several consecutive months. Although mika handles the bulk of accounting tasks, a team of trained accountants provides oversight and handles complex cases, while the platform also facilitates direct interaction with users' financial data through AI assistants via the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

Freddie Kalfayan, Principal at Smedvig Ventures, commented on the market opportunity, noting that Germany's accounting and tax system is among the most complex and costly in Europe for small businesses. "This complexity has historically deterred even large international players from establishing a significant foothold," Kalfayan observed. mika's AI-driven solution is strategically positioned to address this gap, offering a scalable and efficient alternative to traditional, often expensive, manual processes.
