Volta $10B AI Deal with Anthropic Reported

The intense competition for advanced AI computing resources has spurred a significant development, with emerging infrastructure provider Volta reportedly finalizing a substantial $10 billion cloud computing agreement. While Volta has officially identified the client only as an "AI Lab," sources familiar with the matter suggest the partner is none other than leading artificial intelligence firm Anthropic. This multi-year pact, rumored to span six years, underscores the escalating demand for dedicated AI processing power.

This strategic alliance is set to fuel the development of a major AI factory in Europe, specifically in Norway. The facility is slated to offer a considerable 133 megawatts of electrical capacity, designed to house next-generation computing hardware, including NVIDIA's Vera Rubin systems. This substantial power allocation highlights the immense energy requirements of modern AI workloads and the critical need for specialized, high-capacity data centers.

Volta, a company established earlier this year, positions itself as a fully integrated AI infrastructure platform. Its business model encompasses the entire value chain, from securing land and power resources to data center construction, hardware acquisition, cloud software deployment, operational management, and crucially, project financing. This end-to-end approach aims to streamline the deployment of AI compute infrastructure.

The financial architecture supporting Volta's ambitious plans is noteworthy. The company has established a $5 billion AI Infrastructure Program in conjunction with asset manager Azora. This program is engineered to attract institutional capital for funding AI factories, leveraging the security of long-term customer commitments. Furthermore, Volta has successfully closed its seed and Series A funding rounds, attracting significant investment from prominent firms including Azora, Andreessen Horowitz, Altimeter, and NVIDIA, reportedly achieving a valuation of $2.4 billion. Other notable backers include Michael Dell's family office and Matter Venture Partners.

The competitive arena for AI cloud services, often termed 'neoclouds,' is rapidly expanding. Companies like CoreWeave, which previously secured an agreement potentially worth up to $11.9 billion with OpenAI, and others such as Crusoe, Fluidstack, and Nscale, are actively forging long-term contracts and developing extensive data center campuses. Volta's unique proposition lies in its integrated financing model, aiming to use predictable revenue streams from long-term contracts to secure more cost-effective institutional funding, differentiating it from competitors relying heavily on venture equity.

Anthropic, meanwhile, has been actively diversifying its compute supply chain. Beyond this reported deal with Volta, the AI leader has expanded its infrastructure partnerships with giants like Amazon and SpaceX, and is reportedly exploring gigawatt-scale data center collaborations with SK Telecom in South Korea. If confirmed, the Volta agreement would solidify Volta's position by securing a major AI player as a foundational client within its first year of operation, signaling a promising trajectory in the high-stakes AI infrastructure market.
