Analysis

In a significant move to combat escalating wildfire threats, NorthX Climate Tech has committed over $2.2 million in follow-on funding to three British Columbia-based startups. This strategic investment targets companies developing advanced technologies for wildfire detection, prevention, and management, reflecting a growing urgency as climate change intensifies fire seasons across Canada.

The recipients of this crucial capital are Crwn.ai, Nova, and Skyward Wildfire Technologies. These firms are at the forefront of deploying field-proven solutions designed to mitigate the devastating impact of wildfires. Sarah Goodman, President and CEO of NorthX, emphasized the structural nature of current wildfire risks, stating, “Wildfire risk is no longer seasonal, it’s structural.” This underscores the need for sustained technological advancement and rapid scaling of effective tools.

Crwn.ai, based in Kelowna, will receive approximately $981,000 to enhance its predictive capabilities for transmission line wildfire risks. The company utilizes AI and sensor technology to monitor remote infrastructure without manual oversight. This funding will support the deployment of up to 500 monitoring devices across BC’s utility transmission corridors, a critical step in preventing ignitions along vital energy infrastructure.

Victoria’s Nova is set to receive $600,000 to broaden its drone mapping software into a multi-platform system. This expansion will integrate data from various sources, including helicopters, aircraft, satellites, and ground sensors, providing enhanced situational awareness for fire commanders and crews. The goal is to enable faster, safer, and more informed response decisions during active fire events.

Skyward Wildfire Technologies, operating out of Vancouver, has been awarded $643,000 for its innovative lightning-strike prevention system. This technology combines proprietary AI weather modeling with aerial intervention strategies to predict high-risk storms and neutralize their potential to spark fires by addressing the electrical charge in clouds. This proactive approach aims to prevent ignitions before they occur.

NorthX, formerly the BC Centre for Innovation and Clean Energy, specializes in providing non-dilutive funding to commercialize hardware-based climate technologies. Since its inception in 2021, supported by the BC Government, the Government of Canada, and Shell Canada, NorthX has invested nearly $52.1 million across 82 projects. These investments have demonstrably fostered job creation, contributing to over 829 positions, and have successfully catalyzed substantial follow-on investment totaling $621 million, highlighting the platform's effectiveness in scaling impactful climate solutions.
