Analysis

The United Kingdom's energy software sector has attracted a substantial £1 billion in investment over the last decade, with a marked acceleration in funding activity observed in recent years. This surge, detailed in a new analysis by AlbionVC in collaboration with data specialists Beauhurst, highlights a critical juncture for a market ripe for digital transformation.

The research, which scrutinized UK-based asset-light energy software firms established since 2016, revealed that 483 funding rounds have collectively channeled nearly £1 billion into these innovative companies. Notably, the period since 2022 has witnessed a significant uptick, with 2025 alone contributing £260 million to this impressive total. This escalating investment underscores a growing recognition of the sector's potential, fueled by an urgent need for enhanced energy management solutions.

Driving this investment boom is a pronounced imbalance in energy supply and demand. UK electricity prices remain elevated, exceeding pre-crisis levels by over 50% and surpassing most EU nations. Simultaneously, the burgeoning demand from data centers, particularly for AI applications, is projected by the IEA to nearly double by 2030. With grid connection queues stretching to over 700GW and wait times extending up to 15 years, software-based solutions are emerging as the most agile pathway to optimize existing energy infrastructure, from battery storage systems to building energy management.

The period between 2023 and 2025 saw a 34% expansion in total equity capital raised. This growth was propelled by prominent scale-ups such as green energy supplier Fuse, which secured £137 million, heat pump installer Noda with £100 million, and the digital energy marketplace tem, which raised £56 million in 2025. These figures illustrate the increasing appetite for companies addressing tangible energy challenges.

Artificial intelligence is rapidly becoming a cornerstone of innovation within the energy software space. In 2025, AI-centric deals constituted 46% of all energy software transactions and accounted for 66% of initial funding rounds. Recent AI-focused capital injections include those for Gigaton ($26 million), Gyre Energy ($1.3 million), and HavenWise (£1.04 million), signaling a clear trend towards AI-driven efficiency and optimization.

Historically, early-stage funding in this domain was primarily the purview of specialized energy investors, Venture Capital Trusts (VCTs), and regional funds. However, the landscape is shifting, with prominent global venture capital firms such as Atomico, Accel, and Lightspeed now actively entering the market. As Adam Chirkowski, a partner at AlbionVC, aptly stated, "The cost of the electron will define the next decade for businesses, investors and nations alike." He further elaborated that energy, one of the world's largest markets, is undergoing crucial digitization, presenting immense opportunities for founders with dual expertise in energy and software who can tackle infrastructure challenges, and for investors willing to support them.
