Analysis

French innovator HyLight has successfully closed a €13 million funding round, propelling its ambitious plans to expand its fleet of autonomous hydrogen-powered airships. The significant capital infusion was led by prominent investors including Rubio Impact Ventures, DRW, and Teampact Ventures. Existing backers, such as the renowned accelerator Y Combinator and venture capital firm Ring Capital, also participated, underscoring continued confidence in the company's vision.

This latest funding follows a previous €3.7 million raise in April 2024 and marks a pivotal moment for the four-year-old company. Founded in 2022, HyLight designs and operates unique hydrogen airships, dubbed 'HyLighters', engineered for long-range, high-precision surveillance and inspection of critical infrastructure. These advanced aerial platforms are already being deployed for major clients like Enedis, Vinci, and SNCF Réseau, providing vital monitoring for power grids, rail networks, and other essential assets.

The 'HyLighters' offer a compelling alternative to traditional inspection methods. Capable of sustained flight for up to 10 hours and covering distances of up to 350 kilometers, these 12-meter-long airships can carry payloads of up to 10 kilograms. This payload capacity allows for the integration of sophisticated sensors, including LiDAR and high-resolution cameras, enabling the detection of minute defects, such as 1mm anomalies from 25 meters altitude, and the identification of vegetation risks along power lines. The data captured is then processed using artificial intelligence to deliver actionable insights.

HyLight's technology addresses significant limitations inherent in current infrastructure monitoring. Unlike helicopters, which are costly, noisy, and environmentally impactful, or drones with limited flight endurance, HyLight's airships provide extended operational coverage with reduced environmental footprint. This positions the company favorably within the growing market for advanced infrastructure monitoring solutions, a sector increasingly driven by the need for efficiency, safety, and sustainability. The global market for infrastructure inspection services is projected to grow substantially in the coming years, fueled by aging infrastructure and the demand for predictive maintenance.

With a current operational fleet of four airships, HyLight aims to scale its presence significantly, targeting a fleet of fifteen operational units by 2027. Beyond fleet expansion, the company plans to enhance its automated data analysis capabilities and establish a robust European data infrastructure. This strategic move will support the ongoing surveillance and protection of critical networks and territories, with the ultimate goal of creating a continuously updated digital twin of the monitored areas.

The company's strategic roadmap extends beyond infrastructure monitoring. By leveraging the rich data collected by its airships, HyLight intends to penetrate adjacent markets such as insurance, agriculture, and public land management. To support this aggressive growth and European expansion, particularly into markets like Germany and the Netherlands, HyLight is actively recruiting approximately 50 new professionals across engineering, AI, data science, operations, regulatory affairs, and business development.
