Unlike autonomous systems designed for predictable environments, Gravis' AI tackles the unique challenges of construction. Excavators, by nature, interact dynamically with their surroundings, digging and reshaping terrain. Gravis' co-founder and CTO, Dominic Jud, explained that their AI models are trained to interpret nuanced physical feedback, akin to how human operators sense engine vibrations and hydraulic resistance. "Our AI takes that same physical input and grounds it in machine telemetry, responding to varying subterranean forces and soil mechanics at microsecond speeds," Jud stated. This allows for a level of precision that surpasses human sensory capabilities from within the cab.

The Gravis Rack is a compact, roof-mounted unit housing the AI processing chip, cameras, and lidar sensors. Additional sensors and a high-precision GPS module, utilizing GNSS RTS technology for centimeter-level accuracy, are mounted on rear masts. This system can be integrated with excavators from major manufacturers like Caterpillar Inc., John Deere & Co., JCB International Co. Ltd., and Hitachi Ltd. The company claims the system can boost productivity by up to 30% and also functions as an advanced co-pilot for human operators.

Further enhancing operational control, the Gravis Rack syncs with a companion tablet, the Gravis Slate. This interface provides real-time sensor feeds, overlays critical underground utility information to prevent accidental damage, and displays detailed topographical data. This comprehensive approach aims to streamline remote operation and site management. Gravis Robotics has already deployed its technology across numerous global sites and recently secured an $8 million contract to upgrade excavator fleets in the U.K., underscoring its growing market traction.

Ryan Luke Johns, co-founder and CEO, emphasized the foundational role of excavation in all construction projects. "Whether we are building housing, scaling data centers or modernizing energy grids, every project starts with moving earth," Johns remarked. "That foundational work has been the bottleneck slowing down the entire built environment." This significant funding injection from SoftBank Group Corp. is expected to accelerate Gravis Robotics' expansion and solidify its position as a leader in construction automation.
