Analysis

Focus, a comprehensive managed IT and security services provider for the healthcare sector, has significantly expanded its operational footprint by acquiring Progressive Solutions. This strategic move, finalized in January, marks Focus's inaugural entry into the specialized dental IT market, reinforcing its ambition to become a unified technology partner for a diverse range of medical practices nationwide.

The acquisition brings Progressive Solutions, established in 2000 and based in Fenton, Missouri, into the Focus fold. With over two decades of dedicated service to dental practices, Progressive Solutions offers a suite of specialized technology solutions. These include Dental Backup, an automated and encrypted data recovery service; Dental Secure Mail, a HIPAA-compliant communication tool designed for dental workflows; and MyBridge Communications, a VoIP system utilized by more than 6,000 users. These distinct brands will continue to operate under their established identities within the larger Focus platform.

This integration directly addresses the escalating operational complexities and regulatory pressures confronting modern dental practices. Issues such as sophisticated cybersecurity threats, increasingly stringent data privacy mandates like HIPAA, and the challenges of managing disparate technology vendors are common pain points. Focus aims to simplify these hurdles by consolidating IT, security, and data management services under a single, accountable provider, offering a streamlined approach to practice operations.

The dental IT services market is a growing segment within the broader healthcare technology industry. As patient data becomes more digitized and cyber threats more prevalent, specialized IT support is crucial. The global healthcare IT market is projected to reach hundreds of billions of dollars in the coming years, with sub-sectors like dental IT experiencing robust growth driven by the need for compliance and efficiency.

Under the terms of the agreement, Progressive Solutions will continue serving its existing client base in Missouri and Illinois under its current branding through 2026, benefiting from Focus's enhanced resources. Services provided outside these regions will transition to the Focus brand. This expansion aligns with Focus's strategic objective to establish a nationwide presence in healthcare technology support, catering to over 100 different electronic health record and practice management systems.

Bruce Schaumberg, Founder and CEO of Focus, emphasized the shared challenges faced by all healthcare providers, stating, “Dental practices carry the same cybersecurity threats and technology burdens as any healthcare practice, and they deserve a partner who actually understands their world. Cory has built that trust with dental offices across the region over 25 years. Bringing Progressive Solutions into Focus means dental practices now have a Unified Partner who can meet them where they are: fixing what’s broken, stabilizing what’s unsteady, and enabling growth when the foundation is solid.”

Cory Anderson, Founder of Progressive Solutions and now Regional Vice President at Focus, echoed this sentiment: “Progressive Solutions was built on one principle: take the technology burden off the practice so they can focus on their patients. Focus runs on that same principle, just at a scale and depth of capability that makes us an even stronger partner for every dental office we serve.”
