Analysis

Estonian biotechnology firm ÄIO and research institution TFTAK have secured a significant €1.94 million grant to advance their precision fermentation technology for producing microbial oils. This funding, awarded by the Estonian Business and Innovation Agency’s (EIS) Applied Research Programme, will fuel a three-year research and development initiative aimed at enhancing the efficiency and industrial scalability of alternative fat and oil production.

The project, dubbed DigiFoundry 2.0, builds upon prior collaborative efforts between ÄIO and TFTAK. It integrates cutting-edge synthetic biology, advanced fermentation techniques, automation, and digital process control. The core objective is to streamline the conversion of agricultural, food, and wood industry by-products into high-value ingredients for sectors such as food and cosmetics. This strategic investment underscores Estonia's commitment to fostering innovation in the green technology and biotechnology sectors, which are experiencing global growth driven by demand for sustainable and novel ingredients.

ÄIO, a 2022 spin-off from Tallinn University of Technology, specializes in developing fermentation-based oils and fats. Their approach leverages specialized microorganisms to create sustainable alternatives to traditional fats. Professor Petri-Jaan Lahtvee, Co-founder and COO of ÄIO, highlighted the project's ambition: “Our goal is to make microbial oil production not only sustainable, but also highly efficient and economically competitive at an industrial scale. By combining improved fermentation with automation and data-driven process development, we can learn faster, optimise faster, and ultimately produce better ingredients with fewer resources.”

TFTAK, a private research organization with deep expertise in food and biotechnology, will contribute its capabilities in bioprocess optimization, synthetic biology, and food research. Dr. Steven van der Hoek, Scientific Lead at TFTAK, emphasized the synergy: “DF2.0 brings together two areas that are essential for the next generation of industrial biotechnology: advanced biology and intelligent process development. By integrating synthetic biology, fermentation and digital tools, we can generate much more information from every development cycle and use that knowledge to make the next cycle better.”

The €1.94 million grant, part of a larger €2.53 million project budget, was ranked first among applications in the program's tenth funding round. This initiative is supported by the Estonian Ministry of Economic Affairs and Communications. The DigiFoundry 2.0 project aims to create a fully integrated digital biomanufacturing platform. This platform is designed to accelerate the development and reduce the manufacturing costs of fermentation-derived ingredients, making them more accessible and competitive in the global market. The success of this project could position Estonia as a leader in the rapidly expanding precision fermentation market, which is projected to see substantial growth in the coming years as companies seek sustainable alternatives to conventional ingredients.

This funding round follows the initial DigiFoundry project, which established a foundational platform for automated microbial strain design and a Design-Build-Test-Learn cycle. The new phase elevates this work by directly linking biological development with enhanced fermentation, automation, and digital process control, paving the way for efficient, scalable, and cost-effective production of novel ingredients.
