Vireo Ventures, a Berlin-based early-stage venture capital firm, has announced the final close of its €50 million Electrification Fund I, targeting startups that are driving Europe’s shift toward an all-electric economy. The fund will back innovations in grid intelligence, heat decarbonization, and electric mobility infrastructure.

Backed by major European energy players—including Encevo, Verbund X, and EnBW New Ventures—as well as the European Investment Fund, the fund aims to accelerate solutions that address some of the continent’s most pressing energy transition challenges.

Vireo Ventures originated from an angel investor network united by a shared belief: that electrification is the defining investment opportunity of the decade. Despite a tightening fundraising environment, the fund exceeded its original target, underscoring growing investor conviction in climate technology as a long-term growth sector.

Grid investments are central to Europe’s energy security and global competitiveness. Startups bring the speed and innovation needed to meet this urgency,” said Felix Krause, Managing Partner at Vireo Ventures.

Lou Arzur, Investment Manager, added: “We’ve seen the bottlenecks firsthand and designed a fund that pairs early capital with deep sector expertise. This is about building the infrastructure for a climate-resilient Europe.”

Unlike traditional VCs, Vireo takes a hands-on, collaborative approach, working closely with its LPs—many of whom are active energy companies—to pilot and scale new technologies. “Our LPs aren’t passive capital. They help startups run pilot programs and access industrial networks early,” Arzur noted.

To date, Vireo has invested in companies including Encentive, Atmen, Green Fusion, and About:Energy. These firms are building solutions in distributed energy systems, building heat optimization, and EV charging infrastructure, all critical to decarbonizing the European energy system.

Beyond financial returns, the fund also emphasizes founder diversity. Approximately one-third of Vireo’s portfolio companies include at least one female founder—a statistic still rare in the hard-tech venture space. “Diversity is not only a social goal—it’s a competitive advantage in building resilient companies,” said Arzur.

Looking ahead, Vireo Ventures plans to continue expanding its portfolio with high-conviction investments in companies that bolster Europe’s energy sovereignty and promote sustainable industrial competitiveness.

“Our mission is to strengthen Europe’s energy independence through resilient, electrified systems that scale fast and endure,” concluded Arzur.
