ENA Respiratory Gets $3M for Antiviral Nasal Spray Trials

ENA Respiratory, a clinical-stage biotechnology firm focused on combating viral respiratory infections, has secured a significant funding injection of $2.98 million. This non-dilutive capital comes from the government-backed Biointelect Venturer program, a national initiative designed to accelerate the commercialization of Australian infectious disease innovations. The funding is earmarked to advance clinical trials for the company's lead antiviral nasal spray, INNA-051, with a specific focus on individuals suffering from asthma.

The upcoming Australian trial, slated to commence in early 2027, will rigorously assess the safety and pharmacokinetic profile of INNA-051 in adult asthma patients. This patient group is particularly vulnerable to severe complications from common respiratory viruses like influenza, RSV, and coronaviruses. INNA-051, a novel dry-powder nasal spray administered weekly, aims to bolster the innate immune defenses within the nasal passages, the primary entry point for many airborne pathogens. By enhancing this first line of defense, ENA Respiratory seeks to improve the body's rapid response to a broad spectrum of viral threats, potentially mitigating the severity of infections and reducing the need for hospitalization.

This latest funding round builds upon ENA Respiratory's previous success, including a substantial $34 million Series B financing round completed last year. That earlier capital raise was led by prominent investors Brandon Capital and Uniseed, underscoring strong confidence in the company's technology and therapeutic approach. The current grant from Biointelect Venturer is crucial for expanding the clinical development pipeline, particularly for high-risk populations.

Christophe Demaison, CEO of ENA Respiratory, highlighted the strategic importance of this funding. "This grant empowers us to extend our clinical program to encompass vulnerable groups, such as individuals with asthma and other chronic respiratory conditions," Demaison stated. "Understanding how INNA-051 performs in these patients is vital for its future development and broader application in preventing severe respiratory illness." The company is also progressing a Phase II study in the United States, following the successful completion of its initial stage in May, which involved young adults in high-density living or working environments.

The Biointelect Venturer program, funded by the federal government's Medical Research Future Fund, is instrumental in bridging the critical gap between scientific discovery and market-ready solutions in the infectious disease sector. ENA Respiratory is among six Australian biotech companies sharing over $10.48 million in this funding round. Other recipients include SAMMvax (Strep A vaccine), Saccharide Therapeutics (malaria vaccine), Ebivanta Therapeutics (mRNA vaccine for Epstein-Barr virus), Proboxis Biotechnology (vaccine production platform for mosquito-borne viruses), and AdaptiVax (adaptable VLP vaccine platform for respiratory viruses). This collective investment signifies a concerted effort to bolster Australia's biopharmaceutical capabilities and pandemic preparedness.
