Analysis

VINCI has completed the sale of its 50% stake in Mantiqueira Transmissora de Energia S.A., a major high-voltage power line project in Brazil, to Brookfield, a global asset management company. The transaction, worth approximately €130 million, hands Brookfield full ownership of the strategic energy asset.

Spanning 1,200 kilometers across 50 municipalities in the state of Minas Gerais, the Mantiqueira transmission line was developed by Cobra IS, a subsidiary of VINCI. The project, launched after a 2016 public tender, was successfully commissioned in 2022, staying on schedule despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

During its construction phase, the project created jobs for nearly 3,800 workers, primarily from the local workforce. Although ownership has changed, Cobra IS will continue to handle the operation and maintenance of the power line.

This divestment is part of Cobra IS’s asset rotation strategy, which seeks to reallocate capital toward new development opportunities. The sale follows similar transactions with Brookfield, including the transfer of Cobra IS’s 50% stakes in the Sertaneja and Chimarrão transmission concessions. Combined, the three deals amount to 1.8 billion Brazilian reals, or close to €300 million.

Brookfield, through its subsidiary Brookfield Asset Management, has been active in Brazil for over a century, with a strong portfolio across infrastructure, energy, real estate, and private equity. The firm manages billions of dollars in assets in the country and is one of the largest foreign investors in Brazil’s energy and utility sectors. Its Brazilian operations include extensive holdings in renewable energy, power transmission, logistics, and toll roads, aligning with the company’s global focus on sustainable infrastructure.

This transaction highlights VINCI’s disciplined investment strategy and Brookfield’s long-term commitment to expanding its infrastructure footprint in Latin America, particularly in the growing Brazilian energy market.
