Callstack Acquires Margelo for Over €20 Million

Polish software powerhouse Callstack has significantly expanded its capabilities by acquiring Vienna-based engineering firm Margelo. The transaction, which places Margelo's valuation north of 20 million euros, unites two prominent players in the React Native ecosystem. This strategic move is expected to bolster Callstack's international reach and technological depth, particularly as the demand for sophisticated cross-platform mobile development intensifies.

Margelo, under the leadership of its founder Marc Rousavy, has carved out a strong reputation through its impactful open-source contributions. The company is recognized for widely adopted libraries such as Nitro Modules, boasting 34 million downloads, VisionCamera with 40 million downloads, and react-native-mmkv, which has garnered an impressive 67 million downloads. Collectively, Margelo reports over 420 million npm downloads and has contributed significantly to the React Native core, with more than 800 contributions. Beyond its open-source initiatives, Margelo provides expert contract development and performance optimization services to a high-profile clientele, including Discord, Coinbase, Expensify, MetaMask, Rainbow, VSCO, and WalletConnect.

The acquisition follows a period of substantial growth for Callstack, which itself received a significant growth investment last summer from US fund Viking Global Investors. That earlier funding round valued Callstack at approximately 120 million euros, providing a strong financial foundation for further strategic expansion. This latest deal with Margelo is positioned as a natural progression, integrating Margelo's specialized engineering talent and advanced technology into Callstack's established enterprise solutions.

Marc Rousavy, who will continue to lead Margelo's development and play a key role in the combined entity, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership. He highlighted a long-standing professional relationship with Callstack CEO Mike Grabowski, noting, “Mike Grabowski from Callstack and I have been friends for a long time. That makes me all the more excited to keep holding a significant stake in the company and to take mobile technology to an entirely new level together.” The integration aims to leverage Margelo's performance-centric technologies and Callstack's extensive experience in large-scale enterprise deployments.

Both companies view this merger through the lens of evolving software development paradigms, particularly the increasing influence of artificial intelligence. They contend that as AI tools accelerate code generation, the premium on sophisticated architectural design, native integration, performance tuning, and robust release management will escalate. The combined entity is poised to offer a comprehensive suite of services addressing these critical aspects of modern application development, providing a solid technical foundation for businesses navigating the complexities of AI-augmented workflows.

The deal structure details, including the precise transaction price and consideration mix (cash vs. equity), remain undisclosed. However, the integration of Margelo's celebrated open-source projects is confirmed to maintain their open-source status, a crucial point for community trust. This acquisition positions Callstack to further solidify its standing as a leader in React Native development, offering enhanced value to its existing enterprise client base and expanding its global footprint in the competitive technology sector.
