Metafuels Lands €1.92M Dutch Grant for e-SAF Project

Metafuels, a Swiss innovator in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) technology, has secured a significant €1.92 million grant from the Dutch government. This funding, channeled through the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) and its GroenvermogenNL program, will accelerate the development of the company's pioneering e-SAF project, codenamed 'Turbe,' situated in the strategic Port of Rotterdam.

The grant marks a crucial step for Metafuels as it advances its proprietary 'aerobrew' technology, which converts renewable methanol into jet fuel. This methanol-based approach offers a scalable alternative to traditional SAF production methods that rely on finite feedstocks. When produced using green hydrogen and captured carbon, Metafuels' e-SAF can slash lifecycle emissions by up to 90% compared to conventional kerosene, aligning with ambitious climate targets in the aviation sector, a market projected to grow substantially in the coming decades.

This financial injection is earmarked for critical pre-investment activities, including front-end engineering and design (FEED), securing necessary permits, and bolstering commercial development efforts. The support from the RVO underscores the perceived strength and scalability of Metafuels' technology and its potential to contribute to European decarbonization goals. The company's CEO, Saurabh Kapoor, highlighted Rotterdam's position as a premier energy and industrial hub, making it an ideal location for large-scale synthetic fuel production and a vital step towards achieving Final Investment Decision (FID) for the Turbe project.

The 'Turbe' project represents Metafuels' first commercial-scale deployment of its 'aerobrew' system. It is designed to serve as a blueprint for future facilities, with production slated to commence around 2030. This timeline strategically aligns with upcoming e-SAF mandates under the EU's ReFuelEU Aviation initiative. The project's location at Evos Rotterdam offers distinct advantages, including access to established methanol infrastructure, robust multimodal logistics, and a skilled industrial workforce, facilitating efficient operations and distribution.

This recent grant follows a period of notable progress for the Zurich-based startup, which was founded in 2021 by Saurabh Kapoor, Leigh Hackett, and Ulrich Koss. Earlier this year, Metafuels successfully raised €20.7 million (approximately $24 million) in a funding round led by UVC Partners. Furthermore, the company has engaged McDermott for the FEED phase of the Turbe project and has established a demonstration plant for its methanol-to-jet technology at the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) in Switzerland, which is now nearing operational status. Metafuels is actively expanding its European presence, with ongoing development initiatives in both the Netherlands and Denmark.
