Analysis

UK-based StirLight has successfully raised £1.25 million to advance its innovative quality assurance technology for friction stir welding (FSW). This funding injection is set to accelerate the commercialization of its proprietary StirSense platform, aiming to embed real-time weld integrity verification into high-stakes manufacturing processes across critical industries.

The investment, a blend of pre-seed capital and significant grant funding, underscores the growing demand for enhanced quality control in advanced manufacturing. Haatch Ventures, The British Business Bank, and D2N2 contributed over £750,000 in equity, while substantial grants from Innovate UK and The Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI), totaling approximately £500,000, will fuel ongoing research and development projects. This financial backing positions StirLight to scale its operations and deploy its technology with major industrial partners.

Friction stir welding, a solid-state joining process, offers superior mechanical properties and energy efficiency compared to traditional fusion methods. Its adoption is on the rise in sectors like aerospace, nuclear, defense, and automotive, driven by the need for stronger, lighter components and increased production efficiency. However, a persistent hurdle has been the absence of in-process quality assurance, forcing manufacturers to rely on costly and time-consuming post-weld inspections. StirLight's StirSense platform directly addresses this gap by capturing and analyzing critical process data in real-time, enabling immediate anomaly detection and generating auditable quality records for every weld.

The company, co-founded by Dr. Jeroen De Backer (CTO), Dan Lord CEng (COO), and Toby Savage-Yu (CEO), has been actively developing its capabilities since March 2024, already generating revenue from FSW services and contract manufacturing. The newly secured funds will be instrumental in supporting pilot deployments of StirSense with key industrial clients, creating specialized engineering and data science roles, and further refining the core technology. StirLight is actively seeking collaborations with manufacturers eager to integrate this advanced quality assurance solution into their FSW operations.

“The ability to prove weld integrity at scale has always been the key challenge for friction stir welding,” stated Toby Savage-Yu, CEO of StirLight. “StirSense is the solution. We are incredibly grateful for the swift support from our investors and grant bodies, recognizing the critical need for this technology. This funding will empower us to demonstrate the significant impact UK manufacturing innovation can achieve.” The company's focus on providing traceable, real-time quality assurance is expected to significantly de-risk FSW adoption for manufacturers, potentially unlocking wider market penetration for this advanced joining technique.
