Analysis

Italian Family Offices are significantly increasing their exposure to private capital, signaling a maturing investment strategy within the nation's wealthy families. A recent analysis reveals a growing appetite for direct equity investments and private equity funds, underscoring a shift from traditional wealth preservation to active wealth creation.

The latest findings from the Osservatorio Family Office, conducted by the School of Management at Politecnico di Milano, indicate that approximately 267 Family Offices are now active in Italy. Among these, the largest 51 entities collectively manage nearly €19 billion in assets. This concentration highlights the significant influence of larger family offices on the private capital market. Specifically, 93 Single Family Offices oversee a combined invested wealth of €20.2 billion, with a substantial 92% of these assets managed by the top 51 firms, each managing over €100 million.

The data points to a clear trend: 18.5% of Single Family Offices are actively pursuing direct equity investments, while 14.2% are allocating capital to private equity funds. Furthermore, a notable 20% of Single Family Offices are channeling resources into early-stage and venture capital opportunities. This diversification reflects a strategic move to capture higher returns from less liquid, growth-oriented assets, a segment of the market that has seen considerable expansion across Europe.

Multi-Family Offices, while also participating in private markets, exhibit a slightly different focus. The median Assets Under Management for these entities stands at €675 million, serving an average of 15 families. Their involvement in private capital often manifests through advisory services and the organization of club deals, with an average of three such transactions executed annually. Their direct equity allocation is lower at 6.9%, suggesting a preference for curated deal flow and co-investment structures.

The overall sentiment regarding private equity investments is positive, with 53.7% of surveyed operators reporting an increase in their allocations. This upward trajectory aligns with broader European trends where institutional investors and sophisticated family offices are increasingly recognizing private capital as a crucial component of a diversified portfolio. The ability of family offices to provide patient capital, manage risk effectively, and maintain a long-term investment horizon makes them increasingly influential players in the European private capital ecosystem.

Josip Kotlar, the scientific director of the report, emphasizes that the growth of family offices is not merely quantitative but has fundamentally reshaped investment methodologies. These entities have evolved from passive wealth custodians to sophisticated market participants, capable of competing alongside traditional institutional investors and originating their own investment opportunities. Their increasing presence, coupled with expanding deal volumes and dense co-investment networks, solidifies their role as a stable and impactful force within the private capital system.
