Analysis
Nordic Capital has agreed to acquire BMLL, the specialist provider of harmonised historical order book data and analytics, in a move designed to accelerate the firm's global expansion and product development. The private equity investment will be completed alongside BMLL's management and minority shareholder Optiver, with management remaining investors in the business.
Founded in 2014 by a team of Cambridge academics, BMLL supplies the industry with granular Level 3, 2 and 1 order book data across equities, ETFs, futures and US options. The company’s engineering pipeline standardises inconsistent feeds from more than 120 venues into a single, analytics-ready format, lowering the barrier for buy-side quants, sell-side researchers and exchanges to run backtests, build ML models and perform execution analytics without costly in-house data engineering.
The capital infusion from the new owner will be used to broaden venue coverage, deepen historical records and speed the rollout of multi-asset capabilities. Management said the funding is intended to create a defensible, high-quality “golden copy” of historical market data that supports both traditional research workflows and emerging AI-powered use cases — an area where market participants are increasingly willing to pay for verified, clean datasets.
Market context underlines the timing: spending on market data and related services has been resilient, as firms allocate more budget to data quality, cloud delivery and machine-learning infrastructure. Demand for harmonised, cloud-native datasets is rising because it shortens time-to-insight for quantitative teams and reduces total cost of ownership compared with building and maintaining equivalent in-house stacks.
Paul Humphrey, BMLL’s CEO, said the company has evolved into a category leader through its focus on engineering and quality, and that the partnership will enable a step-change in scale and distribution while preserving product continuity. David Samuelson, a partner at Nordic Capital Advisors, commented that the firm sees a strong runway to grow content, analytics and third-party partnerships by leveraging Nordic Capital’s experience in financial technology and data platforms.
For Nordic Capital, the acquisition aligns with its stated focus on Technology & Payments and financial software. The firm has a track record of investing in data and market infrastructure businesses and aims to support BMLL’s go-to-market expansion, deepen partnerships with exchanges and technology platforms, and accelerate product enhancements. Financial terms have not been disclosed.
