Nebius Acquires Clarifai Tech to Enhance AI Inference

Nebius Group N.V., a prominent player in the specialized AI cloud infrastructure sector, has significantly advanced its managed inference capabilities by acquiring the core compute orchestration technology and engineering talent from Clarifai Inc. This strategic move is designed to enhance Nebius's recently launched Token Factory service, a dedicated platform for deploying trained AI models in production environments.

The acquisition, characterized as an "acqui-hire," brings aboard a select group of seasoned researchers and engineers, including Clarifai founder and CEO Matthew Zeiler. Zeiler, a recognized pioneer in machine learning research, will assume the role of Senior Vice President of Research at Nebius. This infusion of expertise is crucial for Nebius as it aims to refine its offerings in the competitive AI infrastructure market, where efficiency and scalability in model inference are paramount.

Clarifai's proprietary technology focuses on orchestrating compute resources, enabling businesses to unify and optimize their AI infrastructure, whether on-premises or cloud-based, through a centralized management portal. This capability directly complements Nebius's strategy, positioning it as a leading "neocloud" provider alongside entities like CoreWeave Inc., differentiating itself from general-purpose cloud providers such as Amazon Web Services Inc., Microsoft Corp., and Google Cloud.

The integration of Clarifai's systems-level expertise into Nebius's Token Factory service is expected to yield substantial improvements in token efficiency. This translates to reduced costs per generated word or image, a critical factor for large-scale AI applications. Just last month, the company committed $643 million to acquire Eigen AI Inc., a startup specializing in model-level optimization.
