Motorola Solutions Acquires D-Fend Solutions for $1.5B

Motorola Solutions is significantly bolstering its aerial security capabilities with the acquisition of Israeli counter-drone specialist D-Fend Solutions for approximately $1.5 billion. This strategic move addresses the escalating threat posed by unauthorized drones, which have evolved from minor nuisances to serious security concerns for critical infrastructure, government facilities, and public safety organizations worldwide.

The deal underscores a critical shift in the security sector, moving beyond mere drone detection to active, non-destructive neutralization. D-Fend Solutions, established in 2016, has pioneered a unique cyber-takeover technology that allows operators to safely gain control of rogue drones in flight and direct them to secure landing zones. This approach avoids the collateral damage and communication interference associated with traditional jamming methods, a crucial differentiator in sensitive environments.

D-Fend's flagship EnforceAir system is already deployed in over 30 countries, including key NATO member states, safeguarding high-value assets such as airports and military installations. The company's strong track record includes partnerships with prominent U.S. agencies like the Departments of Homeland Security, Defense, and Justice, validating its technology's effectiveness in high-stakes scenarios. This acquisition aligns with recent legislative developments, such as the U.S. Safer Skies Act, which empowers law enforcement to manage unauthorized drone incursions more proactively.

This acquisition complements Motorola Solutions' existing investments in the drone ecosystem. Last year, the company acquired Silvus Technologies for $4.4 billion, enhancing its portfolio with advanced secure communication and networking systems vital for drone operations. By integrating D-Fend's neutralization technology, Motorola Solutions now offers a more comprehensive suite of solutions covering the entire drone security spectrum, from communication and networking to threat mitigation.

The market for anti-drone technology is experiencing robust growth, driven by increasing aerial threats. Industry analysts project the global anti-drone market, valued at an estimated $2.47 billion in 2026, to expand significantly, reaching approximately $8.42 billion by 2031. D-Fend Solutions has been a key contributor to this expansion, reporting annual revenue growth exceeding 50% over the past three years and anticipating around $185 million in revenue for 2026.

Motorola Solutions CEO and Chairman Greg Brown highlighted the evolving risk, stating, "Rogue drones have transformed our skies into a landscape of unpredictable risk, where simple detection is no longer enough." The integration of D-Fend is expected to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, pending regulatory approvals, positioning Motorola Solutions as a dominant force in the rapidly expanding aerial security market.
