Deutsche Telekom Buys Polish Fiber Assets for $1.16B

Deutsche Telekom is set to significantly bolster its Polish telecommunications footprint with the acquisition of Fiberhost and INEA from Macquarie Asset Management. The deal, valued at approximately $1.16 billion (€1 billion), will see these Polish digital infrastructure and service entities integrated into Deutsche Telekom's local subsidiary, T-Mobile Polska. The acquisition marks a substantial exit for Macquarie Asset Management from its Polish telecom investments. Macquarie initially acquired INEA, a telecommunications provider serving western Poland, in 2018. Over its eight-year stewardship, Macquarie orchestrated a strategic separation of INEA's operations in 2021. This resulted in the creation of Fiberhost, an open-access wholesale fiber network, and the continued operation of INEA as a retail service provider.

Under Macquarie Asset Management's ownership, Fiberhost experienced remarkable growth, evolving from a single wholesale client to a network supporting over 160 service providers. It has established itself as a premier fiber infrastructure platform in Poland, boasting a high-quality, open-access network that connects numerous homes, businesses, and approximately 3,000 schools to the national telecommunications backbone. This extensive reach positions it as a critical asset in Poland's digital connectivity strategy.

The Polish telecommunications market has seen robust investment, driven by increasing demand for high-speed broadband and government initiatives to expand digital infrastructure. The FTTH segment, in particular, is experiencing accelerated deployment as operators race to upgrade legacy networks.
