Analysis

Brazilian fintech Jota has successfully closed a $30 million Series A funding round, valuing the two-year-old company at $185 million post-money. The significant capital infusion was led by Haun Ventures, the prominent venture capital firm founded by Katie Haun, a former federal prosecutor and Andreessen Horowitz general partner. This marks Haun Ventures' inaugural investment in a Brazilian startup, signaling strong confidence in the region's burgeoning tech ecosystem. The firm manages approximately $2.5 billion in assets.

The funding round, which follows Jota's previous fundraising efforts just over a year ago, also saw participation from existing pre-seed investors HOF Capital and Alter Global. New investor Greyhound Capital also joined the company's cap table, underscoring a broad base of support for Jota's innovative approach to financial services for entrepreneurs.

Founded by seasoned entrepreneur Davi Holanda, who previously spent six years at PagBank developing over 15 products and co-founding the successful banking-as-a-service platform Bankly (later acquired by Méliuz and then Banco BV), Jota is redefining the digital banking experience. The platform leverages AI and conversational interfaces, allowing small business owners to manage their finances through intuitive text, audio, or image-based interactions via a dedicated app and WhatsApp. This approach aims to streamline operations, offering features like QR code generation for payments and instant financial insights.

Jota's core offering includes a digital account accessible through its app and WhatsApp, enabling seamless transactions. Users can query their account balance, review transaction history, and receive business intelligence, such as financial calculations and revenue reports, by simply engaging with the AI chatbot. Holanda envisions this AI agent as the next evolution in financial interfaces, moving beyond traditional banking branches, internet banking, and mobile apps.

Beyond its core banking features, Jota has introduced a suite of AI-driven management tools, including Jota Calendar for event reminders and Jota Reminders and Tasks for scheduling payments. The platform also offers Jota Overdraft, which integrates with Open Finance to monitor account balances, alert users to overdraft situations, and proactively suggest or execute fund transfers. Currently, these advanced management features are provided free of charge.

The company's primary revenue stream is currently derived from FalaTap, a solution that transforms smartphones into card payment terminals, enabling businesses to accept card payments in installments of up to 12 times. Launched just a month prior to this funding announcement, Jota projects an Annualized Recurring Revenue (ARR) of R$50 million by December, encompassing both acquisition fees and receivables factoring. The newly acquired capital will fuel the development of further integrated credit offerings, providing loans at competitive rates when customers face overdrafts. Additionally, Jota plans to introduce "Jota 3.0," an enhanced AI agent operating on a freemium model, offering expanded usage for a subscription fee, aiming to more than triple its user base to nearly one million by year-end.
