Infineon Acquires C2i Semiconductors for AI Power Chip Growth

German semiconductor powerhouse Infineon Technologies is set to significantly expand its artificial intelligence capabilities by acquiring Bengaluru-based startup C2i Semiconductors. This strategic move is designed to enhance Infineon's offerings in the critical AI data center power management sector and simultaneously bolster its research and development footprint within India.

The transaction, announced on August 24th, is slated for completion in the third quarter of 2026. While financial terms remain undisclosed, the acquisition targets C2i's expertise in developing advanced "smart power stage" chips. These components are essential for the high-performance GPUs and CPUs powering modern AI servers, addressing the substantial energy demands inherent in these systems. C2i Semiconductors, founded in 2024 by former Texas Instruments engineers, has rapidly positioned itself as a key innovator in this specialized fabless chip market.

This acquisition arrives at a pivotal moment for India's semiconductor industry. It follows closely on the heels of C2i Semiconductors securing $16.7 million in funding from prominent investors, including Peak XV Partners. Furthermore, the Indian government's recent approval of the Semicon 2.0 scheme signals a concerted effort to fortify the nation's semiconductor ecosystem, attracting investment not only in chip fabrication but also in supporting industries like industrial gases and chemicals.

C2i Semiconductors had been on a trajectory to deliver its initial silicon within months, with plans for its second product, a multi-power stage controller, to be ready for customer sampling by early 2027. The company's CEO and co-founder, Ram Anant, highlighted the extensive need for such power management solutions, noting that a single AI server motherboard can house dozens of these stages, often supporting multiple GPUs.

For Infineon, the integration of C2i brings invaluable intellectual property in software-defined power management, multiphase controllers, and sophisticated system-level architectures like SIVRs and vertical power delivery. Adam White, president of Infineon’s Power Systems division, emphasized that this acquisition will not only solidify Infineon's leadership in AI data center power solutions but also establish a new digital power technologies hub in India. This move leverages India's growing pool of engineering talent, where Infineon already maintains a significant R&D presence with approximately 2,800 employees.

The acquisition offers substantial benefits to C2i Semiconductors as well. Access to Infineon's extensive manufacturing capabilities, broad product portfolio, and global customer network will accelerate the development and deployment of its innovative power systems. Ram Anant expressed that joining Infineon will enable the rapid scaling of software-defined power solutions and broaden their market reach internationally, fulfilling C2i's founding mission to address the escalating power requirements of AI infrastructure.
