ICG Invests in Ray8 Energy for Japan Battery Storage Growth

Global alternative asset manager ICG has forged a strategic alliance with Ray8 Energy, a Japanese developer focused on grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS). This collaboration marks ICG APAC Infrastructure's entry into Japan's burgeoning BESS market, aiming to bolster the development and operational capacity of energy transition assets across the region.

Founded by TomoHide Ta, an entrepreneur with over a decade of renewable energy development experience in Japan, Ray8 Energy benefits from initial backing by early-stage investor Green Tower. The company's leadership team possesses extensive expertise in the development, engineering, commercialization, and operation of large-scale BESS projects, positioning it to capitalize on the growing demand for grid stability solutions.

The partnership will see ICG working closely with Ray8 Energy's management and founder to accelerate the expansion of its BESS platform. Leveraging its existing pipeline of diverse projects and the management's deep domestic network, Ray8 Energy plans to pursue both greenfield development and strategic acquisitions of operational assets. This initiative aligns with Japan's ambitious net-zero targets by 2050, which necessitate robust energy storage to integrate increasing renewable energy capacity while maintaining grid reliability.

Ray8 Energy has set an ambitious goal to deploy over 1,000MW of BESS capacity within the next five years. This target is supported by favorable government policies promoting energy storage as a critical component of the nation's evolving power infrastructure. The Japanese BESS market is projected for significant growth, driven by the need to balance intermittent renewable sources like solar and wind power.

This venture represents ICG APAC Infrastructure's fourth platform partnership in the renewable energy sector within the Asia-Pacific region since 2023. Previous investments include collaborations with Voltaiyo, Revent Energy, and Ampin Energy Transition, underscoring ICG's commitment to advancing the energy transition across diverse geographies.
