Analysis

Nation Data Center (NDC), a prominent French operator backed by the Altarea Group, has significantly expanded its presence in the Brittany region with the acquisition of a new data center facility. This strategic move, aimed at enhancing digital infrastructure resilience, sees NDC taking ownership of a site located in Mordelles, within the greater Rennes metropolitan area. The financial specifics of the transaction with the seller, insurance giant Groupama, were not publicly disclosed.

The newly acquired facility, originally constructed in 2011, offers a substantial gross usable area of 3,038 square meters. It is equipped with four dedicated IT rooms, each spanning 240 square meters, collectively providing 960 square meters of critical IT space. The site currently supports an IT power capacity of 720 kW, with a clear pathway for expansion up to 1.36 MW, indicating future growth potential to meet escalating demand for digital services.

Rebranded as NDC Rennes 2, this facility is set to operate in tandem with NDC's existing infrastructure in Noyal-sur-Vilaine, known as NDC Rennes 1. According to NDC co-managing directors Nicolas Deuze and Ludovic Plante, the integration of NDC Rennes 2 is designed to create a robust, dual-site architecture. This complementary setup is crucial for delivering enhanced operational resilience and multi-site redundancy, directly supporting advanced Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery strategies for clients.

As part of NDC's strategic integration plan, the Mordelles site will undergo a comprehensive modernization initiative. A key objective of this upgrade program is to achieve an impressive Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) rating of 1.3. This commitment to operational efficiency and environmental stewardship aligns with the rigorous sustainability standards upheld by the parent company, Altarea Group, reflecting a dedication to responsible data center development in a sector increasingly scrutinized for its energy consumption.

Founded in 2020, NDC has rapidly established itself as a key player in the French data center market. The company's growth trajectory was significantly boosted by its acquisition by investment firm Altarea in 2022, with Credit Agricole reportedly holding an investor stake. NDC has ambitious expansion plans, targeting the operation of 15 sites by the year 2030, underscoring its aggressive growth strategy in a market driven by cloud adoption and digital transformation.

The French data center market is experiencing robust expansion, fueled by increasing data generation, the proliferation of cloud services, and the ongoing digital transformation across industries. With a projected compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of over 10% for the European data center market in the coming years, strategic acquisitions like this by NDC are vital for operators to secure capacity and offer geographically diverse, resilient solutions. The Rennes acquisition positions NDC to capitalize on this demand, particularly in Western France.
