Analysis

FemoGas S.p.A., a leading Italian group in agricultural biomethane production, has secured €245 million in financing from Infranity to accelerate the development and refinancing of liquid biomethane plants with a combined capacity of 0.5 TWh.

Through its subsidiary Iniziative Biometano S.p.A., FemoGas will initially receive €145 million in committed funding, with an option to raise a further €100 million. Infranity acted as the sole lender in the transaction, marking its first investment in the biogas sector.

The initiative will fund the construction of seven biomethane plants, three of which are already operational, with a goal to double production from 0.25 TWh to 0.5 TWh by 2027. The output will primarily supply road and maritime transport sectors across Europe, enhancing adoption of clean fuels.

Stefano Svegliado, co-CEO of FemoGas, said: “This financing allows us to scale production for heavy-duty and maritime transport while reinforcing Italy’s biomethane infrastructure.”

Stefano Bozzetto, founder and co-CEO, highlighted the environmental benefits: “This program will prevent the emission of 400,000 tonnes of CO₂ annually—equal to roughly 1% of Italy’s agricultural emissions. It also advances the use of non-hydrocarbon-based fertilisers.”

Garbine Unda, Investment Director at Infranity, said: “Partnering with FemoGas marks a strategic step in expanding our role in the energy transition. This transaction shows our ability to execute bilateral deals in the mid-cap infrastructure space.”

FemoGas aims to reach 1.5 TWh in biomethane output by 2030. This would cut annual CO₂ emissions by over 1 million tonnes, equivalent to 2.5% of Italy’s agricultural emissions.

FemoGas was advised by Lazard as financial advisor and Chiomenti as legal advisor. Infranity was supported by Ashurst (legal) and Rina (technical).
