VitalFluid Raises €17.2M for Plasma Water Crop Protection

VitalFluid, an innovator in sustainable agriculture, has successfully closed a €17.2 million funding round to advance its groundbreaking plasma-activated water (PAW) technology for crop protection. This significant capital infusion is set to accelerate the company's global commercial expansion and further refine its residue-free alternative to conventional chemical fungicides.

The investment was co-led by Invest-NL and Alder Tree Investments, underscoring strong confidence in VitalFluid's disruptive approach. A robust group of existing shareholders also participated, including Horticoop, Brabantse Ontwikkelings Maatschappij (BOM), Future Food Fund, Graduate Ventures, Innovation Industries, VDL Groep, and Goeie Grutten Impact Fonds. Additionally, the round features a €2.7 million RVO innovation credit, with Invest-NL contributing €4 million directly.

Erik Hertel, CEO of VitalFluid, highlighted the strategic importance of this funding, stating, "This investment confirms the potential of our technology to make a fundamental contribution to a more sustainable and future-proof food system. It allows us to accelerate our commercial rollout and give more growers access to an effective alternative to chemical crop protection." The company's technology mimics the natural process of lightning creating plasma-activated water, offering a potent, eco-friendly solution for plant health.

The agricultural sector is increasingly seeking alternatives to chemical pesticides due to mounting regulatory pressures, the rise of resistant pathogens, and growing public concern over biodiversity, water purity, and food safety. VitalFluid's PAW technology addresses these challenges by transforming water, air, and electricity into a solution that enhances plant resilience without leaving harmful residues. This innovation is particularly relevant as the global biopesticides market is projected to grow substantially, driven by the demand for sustainable farming practices.

VitalFluid's system isolates and stabilizes reactive nitrogen and oxygen compounds within PAW, providing effective defense against fungal diseases. The company has already demonstrated significant traction, with its technology deployed across more than 100 hectares of commercial strawberry production in the UK, serving prominent growers like Hall Hunter Partnership, Angus Growers, and EC Drummond. This successful transition from pilot programs to large-scale commercial application validates the scalability and efficacy of their solution.

With this new capital, VitalFluid aims to bolster its commercial operations in the UK, initiate expansion into the United States market, and broaden its application across other high-value crops such as apples and grapes. The company, a spin-out from Eindhoven University of Technology founded in 2014, has consistently focused on leveraging scientific advancements for practical agricultural solutions.
