CVC names Peter Rutland president in largest promotion round

CVC Capital Partners has elevated Peter Rutland to a newly created president role as part of the firm’s largest internal promotion programme to date, a broad move that touches strategy, investment leadership and succession planning.

The firm promoted roughly 220 employees across 23 countries and across all strategies, according to the firm’s internal announcement. Alongside Rutland, Søren Vestergaard-Poulsen steps into a new role as chief investment officer for the private equity business, and seven senior professionals were advanced to managing partner — among them Alex Fotakidis, the head of the Greek team.

Rutland joined CVC Capital Partners in 2007 and has led the firm’s private equity coverage in financial services from London. His CV also includes five years at Advent International, and his promotion to president has already prompted market speculation that he could be a future candidate to succeed chief executive Rob Lucas.

Management framed the round as both a commercial and governance step. Senior management said these appointments are designed to sharpen oversight of investment performance across market cycles while deepening the internal leadership bench as part of longer-term succession planning. The restructuring comes against a backdrop of recent integration work at CVC, including the absorption of specialist secondaries capabilities into its platform.

For investors, the timing is notable. CVC reported fee-paying assets under management of €142.1bn as of 30 September, a modest rise from the prior quarter but below the prior-year peak. The group also flagged record realisations of €17.6bn for the year to September — a performance point the new leadership will need to sustain as LPs press for consistent returns.
