CREW Carbon Raises $25M for Wastewater CO2 Capture Tech

CREW Carbon has successfully closed an oversubscribed Series A funding round, securing $25 million to accelerate the deployment of its innovative wastewater treatment optimization and carbon dioxide removal technology. The substantial capital infusion comprises $19 million in equity and $6 million from grants and non-dilutive sources, signaling strong market confidence in the company's dual-pronged approach to environmental solutions.

The financing was spearheaded by Burnt Island Ventures, with significant backing from a consortium of prominent investors including AP Ventures, Sony Innovation Fund, Builders Vision, Kibo Invest, Idemitsu Ventures, New York Ventures, and several family office investors. Existing supporters like Counteract, ANIMO Ventures, Connecticut Innovations, Ponderosa Ventures, and Echo River Capital also participated, underscoring their continued belief in CREW Carbon's mission and technological prowess.

At its core, CREW Carbon's patented system addresses critical challenges faced by the wastewater treatment sector. Utilities are grappling with escalating operational costs, which have reportedly doubled in the last two decades, driven by stricter environmental mandates, increasing wastewater volumes, and aging infrastructure. CREW's technology offers a compelling solution by leveraging naturally sourced alkaline minerals to enhance pH and alkalinity within treatment systems. This optimization leads to improved pollutant removal, better sludge settling, reduced reliance on chemical additives, and ultimately, increased plant capacity and efficiency, often avoiding the need for costly capital upgrades.

Beyond operational enhancements, the technology offers a unique carbon removal pathway. By permanently sequestering captured CO2 and potent greenhouse gases within industrial byproducts, CREW Carbon provides a verifiable and scalable method for carbon dioxide removal (CDR). This approach bypasses many of the complex permitting and funding hurdles associated with other CDR technologies. The company has already demonstrated its efficacy, with deployments at nearly a dozen wastewater facilities across the U.S. and Europe since its commercial launch in 2024. Notably, one utility client is reportedly considering deferring $350 million in planned infrastructure expansions thanks to the performance gains achieved with CREW's system.

The company's traction is further evidenced by securing over $33 million in carbon removal offtake agreements from major corporations such as JPMorgan Chase, Google, Autodesk, and Stripe, facilitated through Frontier. CREW Carbon has also captured more than 2,000 tons of CO2 and received a $2.3 million award from the Colorado Energy Office. The development of proprietary measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) capabilities is also a key differentiator, providing transparency and credibility for carbon credit buyers.

This new funding will be instrumental in scaling CREW Carbon's operations. The company plans to expand its reach to more wastewater utilities and bolster its team with key hires in 2026, focusing on wastewater process technology, supply chain management, and business development. The broader market for industrial decarbonization and environmental infrastructure services is experiencing significant growth, with innovative solutions like CREW Carbon's poised to capture a substantial share by offering tangible economic and environmental benefits.
