TidalSense Raises €16.6M for AI Respiratory Diagnostics

TidalSense, a UK-based innovator in AI-driven respiratory diagnostics, has successfully closed a €16.6 million ($19 million) funding round. This significant capital injection is earmarked for accelerating the commercial rollout of its proprietary technology across the UK and expanding its reach internationally, with a strategic focus on the United States market.

The latest funding round saw participation from new investor Cross-Border Impact Ventures, alongside continued support from existing backers including BGF, Airstream Capital, and Foresight Group. This latest infusion brings TidalSense's total funding to an impressive €35.1 million ($40 million), which also incorporates substantial grant funding from bodies such as Innovate UK, SBRI, NIHR, and Asthma-Lung UK.

TidalSense is revolutionizing the diagnosis of chronic respiratory conditions, particularly Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), which affects approximately one in five individuals globally and remains a leading cause of mortality in the UK. Current diagnostic methods, like spirometry, are often time-consuming, require specialized training, and are not widely accessible, leading to significant diagnostic delays. In the UK alone, over half of NHS regions struggle to meet the demand for spirometry, with an estimated 1.9 million people living with undiagnosed or diagnosed COPD, and around 600,000 awaiting a formal diagnosis.

The company's core innovation lies in its patented N-Tidal sensor technology and accompanying AI algorithms. Unlike traditional spirometry, TidalSense's N-Tidal Diagnose system requires patients to breathe normally for just 75 seconds into a handheld device. The system captures a CO₂ waveform, which sophisticated AI models then analyze to detect COPD with remarkable accuracy. This approach drastically simplifies the diagnostic process, enabling any healthcare professional to be trained in its use within 10 minutes, without the need for specialized qualifications. The AI models have been trained on an extensive dataset of over 2.5 million patient breaths, demonstrating over 90% accuracy in post-market validation studies.

Dr. Ameera Patel, CEO of TidalSense, highlighted the critical need for improved respiratory diagnostics, stating, “Respiratory disease has been neglected for years, often overshadowed by other major illnesses. The World Health Organisation now recognizes COPD as a global health priority, and it’s time we addressed the diagnostic gap.” She further emphasized the technology's potential to bridge disparities, noting that lower-income and minority communities disproportionately suffer from delayed diagnoses due to the limitations of current methods.

The N-Tidal Diagnose software achieved a significant regulatory milestone in March 2025, becoming the first non-spirometry AI diagnostic device to secure a CE mark under the EU MDR (Class IIa) for COPD. Following its initial launch within the NHS in September 2025, the technology has seen expanding adoption across various healthcare settings, including NHS Wales and community lung screening clinics in Southern England, and now in Glasgow, underscoring its growing clinical utility and market acceptance.
