AWS Acquires DuckDB Creator, Boosts Embedded Analytics

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has finalized an agreement to acquire DuckLabs B.V., the Amsterdam-based entity behind the highly regarded open-source analytical database, DuckDB. This strategic move is set to significantly enhance AWS's embedded analytics capabilities, integrating DuckDB's high-performance, in-process data processing power directly into a broader range of enterprise solutions.

The acquisition, anticipated to conclude next month, will see the integration of DuckLabs' engineering talent into the AWS fold. Their primary objective will be to scale and advance the global reach and functionality of DuckDB. Since its inception just over five years ago, DuckDB has garnered substantial adoption, often likened to an analytical counterpart to SQLite, enabling complex SQL queries directly within applications without the need for separate server infrastructure. Its efficiency and ease of integration have driven remarkable growth, with download figures previously exceeding three million daily.

Despite the acquisition, AWS has publicly committed to preserving DuckDB's open-source nature. The company plans to continue fostering the development of the broader open-source ecosystem surrounding DuckDB, including related projects like DuckLake and Quack, ensuring they remain freely accessible under their existing MIT licenses. The core engineering team, including co-founders Hannes Mühleisen and Mark Raasveldt, will continue their work from Amsterdam, with the independent DuckDB Foundation maintaining its role as the project's steward.

This integration deepens a collaborative relationship that commenced in early 2025, when DuckLabs and AWS partnered to introduce DuckDB support within Amazon S3 Tables and Amazon SageMaker Lakehouse. This prior work focused on empowering enterprises with accelerated data operations through embeddable analytics. The acquisition aims to build upon this foundation, leveraging AWS's extensive cloud infrastructure and global network to introduce DuckDB's powerful analytical stack to a significantly wider audience.

The move aligns with AWS's broader strategy to refine its native analytics services, making them faster, more user-friendly, and cost-effective. For DuckDB, the backing of AWS provides access to unparalleled cloud resources and market reach, facilitating its expansion. Andy Warfield, AWS Vice President and Distinguished Engineer, emphasized the strong community affinity for DuckDB as a key driver for the acquisition, noting its widespread use and appreciation among S3 customers. He reiterated AWS's dedication to the project's open-source development under the DuckDB Foundation's guidance.

This transition also reshapes DuckLabs' operational funding. Previously reliant on commercial support and development partnerships for revenue, the company will now benefit from AWS's financial backing. This will enable increased investment in the open-source ecosystem, including the establishment of a technical advisory board within the DuckDB Foundation to incorporate community feedback into the project's roadmap. Furthermore, AWS intends to broaden DuckDB's extension capabilities to support third-party signed extensions, fostering greater innovation within the developer community.
