AMD Acquires Mext Corp. for Data Center Memory Optimization

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) has strategically acquired Mext Corp., a specialist in optimizing flash memory for data center environments. This move is designed to directly address the escalating memory supply challenges faced by clients deploying artificial intelligence workloads, a critical bottleneck in the rapidly expanding AI infrastructure market.

The integration of Mext's innovative AI-native memory tiering technology promises to significantly enhance system efficiency and reduce operational expenditures for AMD's customers. By intelligently shifting less frequently accessed data from expensive dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) to more cost-effective NAND-based flash storage, the acquired technology can unlock substantial savings, potentially reducing total cost of ownership by orders of magnitude for certain data types.

At the core of Mext's offering is a predictive memory engine. This engine leverages AI algorithms to continuously analyze data access patterns, anticipating which information stored on flash might be required imminently. It then proactively moves this data back into DRAM, ensuring applications, particularly demanding AI models, can access it with minimal latency, thereby maintaining peak performance without the need for excessive DRAM capacity.
