Analysis
Allianz Global Investors (AllianzGI) has acquired a minority stake in global data centre developer and operator Yondr Group, marking another strategic move into digital infrastructure amid rising demand for AI-powered data capacity.
The stake was acquired by Allianz Capital Partners on behalf of Allianz insurance companies and the Allianz European Infrastructure Fund II, through a co-investment partnership with DigitalBridge and CDPQ (La Caisse).
Yondr, headquartered in Europe, owns and operates hyperscale data centre campuses across Germany, the Netherlands, the UK, the US, and Canada. With over 420MW of capacity already committed to hyperscale clients and a landbank supporting over 1GW of future build-out, the company is a significant force in the global data infrastructure space.
Strategic Context: A Data Center Investment Surge
Allianz’s entry into Yondr follows a wave of global infrastructure deals focused on data centers, including:
- KKR and Singtel’s $800M JV for data centers in Southeast Asia, launched in 2025.
- DigitalBridge and IFM’s $11B acquisition of Switch Inc., completed in 2024.
- Blackstone’s expansion of QTS Realty Trust, investing over $8B for hyperscale builds.
- Brookfield’s $1.5B deal with Nxtra (India), co-owned by Bharti Airtel.
These deals highlight the critical role of hyperscale infrastructure in enabling AI, cloud computing, and digital transformation.
Sustainability and Returns
Yondr has committed to energy-efficient, low-emission data centres. Allianz noted Yondr’s carbon-targets and ESG integration as a central pillar of the investment.
Ludovic Subran, Allianz Group CIO, said:
“Investments like Yondr support the digital and energy transition while generating long-term value.”
Joerg Spanier, Co-head of Infrastructure Equity at AllianzGI, added:
“Data centres are the foundation of the digital economy. Yondr strengthens our infrastructure stack across fibre, towers, and cloud.”
Allianz’s Growing Infrastructure Portfolio
AllianzGI manages over €95 billion in private markets, including €50 billion in infrastructure. The Yondr investment deepens its exposure to digital megatrends, complementing its existing fibre and telecom tower assets.
