About This Role
Role overview
January Capital, a venture firm investing in technology businesses that will power growth in the Asia-Pacific region and managing more than US$500 million for institutions, corporations, family offices and high-net-worth individuals, is hiring a Senior Investor to help lead its investments in software and AI. Portfolio companies include Akulaku, ShopBack, Skedulo, Go1, Cyble, Cialfo and Tazapay.
The role is not simply deal execution. The firm wants someone who can develop an independent view on where technology is going, build relationships with exceptional founders early and lead investments when the answer is not yet clear. The Senior Investor works directly with the Partners on investments from pre-seed to pre-Series A, primarily across Asia-Pacific, with significant ownership.
Key responsibilities
- Find exceptional people and companies early, building relationships with technical founders, researchers and emerging ecosystems before they become consensus opportunities.
- Lead investments end-to-end: first meeting, thesis development, technical and commercial diligence, Investment Committee, negotiation and execution.
- Develop differentiated theses in areas such as AI infrastructure, developer tooling, vertical and applied AI and software infrastructure.
- Set the standard for technical diligence, distinguishing genuine technical differentiation from features likely to commoditise.
- Partner with founders after investment, holding board or observer positions where appropriate and supporting product, hiring, customers, strategy and future financing.
- Build the firm's technical network across Southeast Asia, Australia and the US.
- Mentor junior investors and raise the standard of sourcing, research, diligence and investment thinking.
- Work alongside the firm's data and engineering capabilities to improve proprietary tools, datasets and workflows, and contribute to research, content, events and knowledge infrastructure.
Requirements
- Approximately 7+ years of relevant experience across venture investing, company building, software engineering, AI/ML, research or technology leadership.
- A deep technical foundation, ideally including formal training in Computer Science, AI/ML, Data Science, Engineering or a related discipline, plus meaningful experience building or evaluating technology.
- Evidence of originating opportunities and forming independent conviction.
- Ability to understand software and AI companies at a technical level (architecture, data, models, infrastructure, developer workflows) and connect it to commercial outcomes.
- Fluency with the fast-evolving AI ecosystem and a habit of experimenting with new models and tools.
- Founder empathy, ideally from building a company or working alongside founders in a senior technical or product capacity.
- Exceptional analytical and communication ability, and the maturity to operate with significant autonomy in a small investment partnership.
