The Column Group V

The Column Group V is a $615M early-stage biotech VC fund closed June 2022, targeting platform science companies in US life sciences.

About This Fund

The Column Group V ("TCG V") is the fifth early-stage venture capital fund of The Column Group (TCG), a San Francisco-based life sciences investment firm dedicated to funding and building transformative biomedical companies. The fund held a first and final close on June 9, 2022 at $615 million, raising the amount as part of a broader $1.23 billion dual-fund close alongside its companion vehicle The Column Group Opportunity III. TCG V is the primary early-stage vehicle in TCG's fund ecosystem, targeting first investments in breakthrough scientific platform companies led by exceptional scientists and translational researchers. With the combined close, The Column Group oversees more than $4 billion in assets under management.

TCG V invests in "big idea" companies built around scientific platforms capable of generating multiple differentiated therapeutic product opportunities. The fund targets early-stage investments—from seed through Series B—in companies at the frontier of genomics, proteomics, cell therapy, gene editing, structural biology, and other foundational biological disciplines. The Column Group's investment model is distinctive in its edge-to-edge approach: the firm deploys capital from inception through clinical development and into late-stage programmes via its companion Opportunity fund series, providing a continuous source of financing for portfolio companies as they mature. This continuity reduces financing risk and aligns TCG's incentives closely with those of founding scientists and management teams.

The Column Group has established one of the most admired track records in life sciences venture capital, with prior fund returns driven by portfolio companies that have pioneered novel mechanisms in oncology, immunology, and rare diseases. TCG's portfolio companies are frequently acquired by or partnered with major pharmaceutical companies, and the firm is known for its unusually rigorous scientific diligence process and its collaborative approach to company building. TCG V continues this tradition of frontier science investment, positioning it as a key vehicle for translating cutting-edge biomedical research into meaningful patient impact.
