About This Fund
Seedstars Africa Ventures I is an impact-focused venture capital fund targeting $80 million, managed by Seedstars, a Switzerland-based investment platform with over a decade of experience investing in early-stage technology companies across emerging markets. The fund achieved a first close of $42 million in December 2024, announced at the Africa Investment Forum Market Days in Rabat, Morocco, with anchor commitments from the African Development Bank, EIB Global with the support of the European Union through the ACP Trust Fund, and Boost Africa. The fund maintains an active presence across 25 African countries, with investment and operating teams based in Nairobi, Dakar, and Paris and particular emphasis on Francophone African markets that have historically been underserved by institutional venture capital.
Seedstars Africa Ventures I focuses on seed and early Series A investments in African technology companies addressing critical structural economic challenges in climate, food systems, energy access, internet connectivity, financial inclusion, and payments infrastructure. The fund makes initial investments of up to $2 million with follow-on capacity of up to $5 million per portfolio company, providing active operational support and catalyzing subsequent rounds from institutional co-investors by leading successive investment tranches. The investment thesis combines Seedstars' proprietary Pan-African network — built through a decade of running startup competitions, accelerators, and seed investment vehicles across Africa — with a development finance-anchored blended finance structure that allows DFIs to participate alongside commercial investors.
At the time of first close, the fund had deployed over $10 million across five portfolio companies collectively serving more than 60 million people, including internet connectivity solutions reaching 60,000 households, agricultural support for 50,000 farmers, and financial inclusion services for 30,000 individuals across eight African countries. These impact metrics reflect the fund's dual mandate of generating venture-scale returns while contributing measurable social and environmental outcomes, positioning Seedstars Africa Ventures I within the growing ecosystem of DFI-backed impact venture vehicles targeting Sub-Saharan and Francophone Africa.
