About This Fund
Rainmatter is the venture investment fund of Zerodha, India's leading discount brokerage and fintech platform, established in 2016 by Zerodha co-founders Nithin Kamath and Kailash Nadh in Bengaluru, India. Operating as a corporate venture capital and patient capital vehicle, Rainmatter has invested in more than 160 Indian startups since inception, deploying over ₹1,500 crore (approximately $180 million) across the fintech, climate, health, and media sectors.
Unlike conventional venture capital funds with defined fund lives and mandatory exit timelines, Rainmatter operates under a perennial structure designed for long-term, patient capital deployment. In 2023, Zerodha committed an additional ₹1,000 crore in this perennial format—providing capital with no exit mandates and enabling founders to build enduring enterprises without the pressure of artificial liquidity timelines. Zerodha directs 10% of its annual earnings toward Rainmatter's startup investments and 10% to social development initiatives via the Rainmatter Foundation, which has separately committed $200 million to climate action with all economic upside reinvested into the foundation.
Rainmatter's philosophy centers on backing Indian founders solving meaningful problems in financial services, healthcare, climate, and media. The fund provides capital alongside access to Zerodha's financial infrastructure, payment APIs, and product validation capabilities, while deliberately avoiding board seats and active business participation. Ticket sizes range from ₹50 lakhs to ₹100 crores, enabling support across early and growth stages. The portfolio includes CRED—India's only Rainmatter unicorn—Jupiter, smallcase, PeeSafe, and over 155 other companies spanning fintech, climate technology, health, and media.
