About This Fund
The uMunthu Fund is an impact-oriented private equity vehicle jointly managed by Goodwell Investments BV and Alitheia Capital, targeting inclusive growth companies across sub-Saharan Africa. Launched in 2019 with an initial focus on underserved populations, the fund reached a final close of approximately EUR 62.2 million in June 2021. It invests growth-stage equity in small and medium-sized enterprises operating in sectors critical to daily economic life across the region, including financial services and fintech, mobility and logistics, food and agriculture, clean energy, education, and affordable housing. The fund's name derives from the Bantu philosophical concept of ubuntu, underscoring the foundational belief that investment returns and broad-based social impact are mutually reinforcing goals.
The fund's strategy centers on direct equity stakes in early and growth-stage companies providing affordable, high-quality goods and services to mass-market consumers across sub-Saharan Africa, with particular emphasis on digital-economy enablers in financial inclusion and supply-chain resilience. Sector allocation is weighted toward financial services and fintech at approximately 35 to 50 percent of portfolio value, mobility and logistics at approximately 25 percent, and a diverse set of complementary impact verticals including agri-tech, healthcare delivery, and e-commerce infrastructure. Alitheia Capital provides on-the-ground origination and portfolio support from offices across Africa, while Goodwell Investments contributes its European institutional network and two decades of sub-Saharan impact investing experience, together building a diversified portfolio that spans 42 countries across the region.
Since its inception, the uMunthu Fund has invested in 19 portfolio companies across sub-Saharan Africa, completing two exits and demonstrating a viable model for linking commercial returns with measurable development impact. Portfolio companies include innovators in financial technology, agricultural supply chains, and mobility logistics. The fund is fully invested and in active portfolio management and gradual divestment. Goodwell Investments and Alitheia Capital subsequently launched uMunthu II targeting EUR 150 million in capital commitments, validating the inclusive growth framework pioneered by the original fund and attracting continued interest from development finance institutions and institutional impact investors seeking exposure to African growth markets.
