Ambienta Small Cap Strategy is the small-cap private equity investment strategy operated by Ambienta SGR, the Milan-based investment manager that has spent nearly 20 years building the leading European private equity platform dedicated to environmental sustainability. The strategy represents the firm's focused expansion into smaller European environmental champions, targeting businesses that are too early-stage for Ambienta's flagship mid-cap vehicle but share the same environmental performance characteristics and value-creation trajectory. The strategy's inaugural fund vehicle is Ambienta Small Cap Fund I.
The strategy invests in European companies with revenues up to €150 million and enterprise values of €50 million to €100 million across sectors where environmental sustainability drives competitive advantage: resource efficiency, pollution control, water treatment, sustainable manufacturing, and environmental services. The investment process applies Ambienta's proprietary Environmental Impact Analysis (EIA) and ESG in Action frameworks to evaluate environmental credentials and drive active improvement across the portfolio. Deployment is managed from Milan and Paris by a dedicated small-cap team.
The strategy's first fund, Ambienta Small Cap Fund I, closed in June 2025 at €500 million, surpassing its €450 million target. This success validates the thesis that institutional investors have strong appetite for small-cap environmental PE alongside Ambienta's established mid-cap offering. Ambienta SGR manages approximately €3 billion in total assets under management across its private equity and sustainable credit strategies, making the Small Cap Strategy an important pillar in its full-spectrum environmental investment platform.
