Montgomery County Employees’ Retirement System (ERS), established in 1965, is a defined-benefit pension plan based in Rockville, Maryland. It provides retirement, disability, and death benefits to full-time Montgomery County employees and participating agencies, and is administered by the County’s Employees’ Retirement Board.
As of June 30, 2024, the ERS has approximately 6,681 active members and 6,972 retirees and beneficiaries, with net assets of USD 4.915 billion. Membership has been closed to new entrants hired after October 1994, except for public safety workers and Guaranteed Retirement Income Plan (GRIP) participants.
The ERS’s investment strategy includes diversified asset allocations managed by its internal investment staff and overseen under Montgomery County’s pooled trust fund structure. The plan adheres to governmental accounting standards and long-term funding discipline.
