Company Profile
Haystack is an early-stage venture capital firm that focuses on backing outlier founders in the initial chapters of software and technology startup formation. The firm typically invests between $1 million and $3 million in initial rounds, and can either lead or participate in these investments. Haystack is dedicated to partnering with innovative companies that are shaping the future across various sectors.
Haystack was founded in 2013 by Semil Shah, who established the firm after a decade of experience as a prolific early-stage investor and holding product and operational roles at early-stage startups, including one acquired by Apple. Shah's journey into venture capital was driven by a desire to invest long-term, leading him to create his own fund to back promising early-stage companies. He has since been recognized multiple times on the Forbes Midas List for Seed Investors.
Haystack boasts a strong portfolio of successful companies, including early investments in industry leaders such as DoorDash, Instacart, and Figma. Other notable investments include Hashicorp, Opendoor, Carta, Applied Intuition, Ironclad, nTop, Astranis, Redpanda, Scribe, Haus Analytics, Nominal, Exa, Granola, Hadrian, and Suno. These companies span diverse areas from food delivery and online grocery to design platforms, enterprise software, AI, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing.
The Haystack team is a small, tight-knit group of investors committed to being trusted early partners to founders. Founding Partner Semil Shah brings extensive experience in early-stage investing and startup operations.
