Company Profile
The Educational Employees' Supplementary Retirement System of Fairfax County (ERFC) is a defined-benefit retirement plan designed to supplement the primary retirement benefits provided by the Virginia Retirement System (VRS) and Social Security. It primarily serves full-time Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) employees, including teachers, educational personnel, instructional assistants, administrators, administrative support staff, and technical staff, who are automatically enrolled. Contributions to ERFC are tax-deferred, reducing taxable income during active employment.
ERFC requires five years of full-time service for members to become vested and eligible for retirement benefits. The system offers multiple retirement plan tiers based on hire date, including the Legacy Plan for employees hired before July 1, 2001, and the ERFC 2001 Tier 2 Plan for those hired thereafter. The plan provides various payout options and recognizes credited service, including military and purchased service credits, to calculate benefits.
Governed by a seven-member Board of Trustees, ERFC emphasizes prudent financial stewardship to enhance members' financial security. The system manages over $3 billion in assets and actively invests in diverse asset classes, including private equity, real estate debt, renewable infrastructure, and venture capital, with commitments to multiple funds targeting various sectors globally. ERFC also provides comprehensive retirement services, education, and support to its members.
