The Carolina Angel Network (CAN) is a university-affiliated angel network that connects UNC-Chapel Hill alumni and friends with early-stage startups that have ties to the university. The network facilitates high-growth investment opportunities, curating 4-6 private investment opportunities annually for its accredited investor members. Founded in 2016, the Carolina Angel Network began evaluating its first deals in February 2017. It was established with the support of the UNC Office of Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Economic Development, UNC Development Office, Kenan-Flagler Business School, and the Vice Chancellor of Finance & Administration. Key figures in its founding include Executive Director Randy Myer and Development Director Ted Zoller, with a mission to empower Tar Heels in their entrepreneurial endeavors.
Since its inception, CAN has deployed over $30 million across 35 companies. Their portfolio includes companies in various sectors such as medical devices (e.g., 410 Medical, Arctx, Baebies), digital healthcare (e.g., Bivarus), consumer products (e.g., Carpe), and technology (e.g., AI software platforms, location-based marketing software). They also invest in non-life science products including software, hardware, and consumer goods.
The network is led by an experienced team, including Executive Director Maureen O'Connor, Director Brett Luing, and Managing Director Randy Myer. Maureen O'Connor brings extensive experience from the healthcare industry, including leadership roles at Whiterabbit.ai and Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina. Brett Luing has a background in early-stage venture capital investments and accelerator programs. Randy Myer is a professor at the Kenan-Flagler Business School and founded Best Friends Pet Care. The team leverages professional investor backgrounds and a strong member network for due diligence and value-add support to portfolio companies.
