Branch Energy is a vertically integrated distributed energy storage company that owns and operates behind-the-meter battery systems for commercial and industrial customers, aggregating them into virtual power plants. The company installs battery fleets at no upfront cost to C&I customers, guarantees savings on their energy bills through fixed-price contracts, and earns revenue from grid services on the front of the meter. In Texas, Branch generates income via energy arbitrage and demand-charge management in ERCOT: charging batteries when wholesale prices are low and discharging during peak demand spikes. Founded in 2021 and headquartered in Houston, Texas, Branch integrates down to the energy management system layer, giving it full-stack visibility over its distributed fleet. In September 2026, the company announced a $33 million Series B to expand into PJM via Illinois, where it plans to partner with data center hyperscalers under long-term contracts (10-year minimum terms with five-year auto-renewals). PJM recently opened a pathway for large energy users to bring their own capacity, allowing data centers to finance distributed batteries anywhere in the PJM system and count that capacity toward their interconnection queue, accelerating grid access. Branch had previously raised $10.8 million in a Series A led by Prelude Ventures in August 2024.
