Barshop Ventures, LLC operates as the family office for the Sam and Ann Barshop family, engaging in the active investment and management of a diverse portfolio of assets. The firm's investment scope encompasses commercial real estate, equity and fixed income securities, alternative investments, operating businesses, private equity, and early to mid-stage venture capital. Their strategic focus areas include media, technology, consumer products, life sciences, real estate, agriculture, and telecommunications, with investments reaching globally.

The Barshop family's entrepreneurial journey began in 1936 with Joe Barshop's Banana Distributing Company, which later expanded into real estate in San Antonio, Texas. Sam and Philip Barshop, Joe's sons, further diversified the family's ventures by co-founding the first La Quinta Motor Inn in 1968, which grew to over 200 hotels before its public offering in 1974. Sam Barshop also played a foundational role on the board of Southwest Airlines. Following Sam Barshop's exit from La Quinta, Barshop Ventures, LLC was established around 1997 to manage the family's extensive assets.

Barshop Ventures partners with Barshop & Oles Company for its commercial real estate operations, a firm created in 1994 from the merger of Barshop Enterprises and C.P. Oles Company. The firm makes direct investments in early and mid-stage companies, particularly in life sciences, information technology, software, and consumer packaged goods. Notable past investments include Foxtrot, Verb, and BlueAvocado, with investments typically spanning Seed and Series B rounds.

The leadership team at Barshop Ventures includes Bruce Barshop as Chairman and Ben Barshop as President, alongside Fran True serving as Vice President/Controller. Bruce Barshop brings extensive experience in venture capital, banking, finance, law, and real estate, having served on numerous boards for early-stage enterprises in media, telecommunications, life sciences, and medical devices. Ben Barshop contributes expertise in commercial real estate, financial analysis, and debt structuring, actively overseeing the firm's Dallas office. The firm operates with a small team of four, including two partners, leveraging a deep understanding of diversified asset management and venture capital.
